More than 800 people in Dumfries and Galloway died last winter. And new figures show there were more than 100 extra deaths during the winter months than during the rest of the year.

The figures were released this week by National Records of Scotland. Between December 2022 and March 2023, 809 deaths were registered in Dumfries and Galloway.

That was 47 more than the same period the previous year and the second highest number since 2010/11. The NRS figures also show that there were 113 additional deaths registered in the region between December and March than during non-winter periods.

The majority of the excess deaths were among people aged 85 or older. Across Scotland, there were 24,427 deaths registered between December last year and March this year – the highest number of winter deaths for more than 30 years.
