Married couple and those in civil partnerships have been urged to remember their marriage allowances. HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) is reminding couples of the allowance which allows married couples or people in civil partnerships to share their personal tax allowances.

The allowance can apply if one partner earns below the personal allowance threshold of £12,570 while the other is a basic rate taxpayer.

Furthermore, couples who have been together for years are still eligible for the allowance and can transfer 10 per cent of their tax-free allowance to their partner which reduced the tax they pay by up to £252 a year.

In fact, if eligible, couples can backdate their claims for up to four previous tax years. Read more: Fury over homes flooded with raw sewage during heavy rain Claims can be made directly via HMRC's online portal to ensure they receive 100 per cent of the tax relief they are eligible for.
