Manchester United have been encouraged to keep hold of Scott McTominay this summer so they are not left short on numbers in midfield.

The Reds have already sold Fred to Fenerbahce while academy product Zidane Iqbal became the first to exit United this summer upon his €1m exit to FC Utrecht.

Mason Mount was brought in on a £70m deal but is now sidelined for the foreseeable future, with Kobbie Mainoo also injured. Christian Eriksen is likely to come in to fill the midfield void, although Chris Sutton believes the decision not to use Scott McTominay in the loss to Tottenham last weekend was an error.

The 1995 Premier League winner told the Daily Mail that McTominay should not be sold in order to bring in a new signing, and questioned United’s stance of their insistence to sell players before buying any further new signings.
