Mason Greenwood will not train with, or play for, Manchester United for further notice after he was released on bail. Greenwood, 20, was arrested on Sunday on suspicion of rape and assault and he was then further arrested on Tuesday on suspicion of sexual assault and threats to kill.

He was detained in custody after police became aware of allegations made by a woman reporting incidents of violence. On Wednesday morning, Greater Manchester Police said he had been released on bail.

A statement from GMP on Wednesday said: "A 20-year-old man arrested (on Sunday 30 January 2022) on suspicion of the rape and assault of a woman has been released on bail pending further investigation." A United spokesperson said on Thursday: "Although Mason has been released on bail, that doesn't change the situation with regard to him not training or playing until further notice." Greenwood, born in Bradford, came through the United academy and made his debut against Paris Saint-Germain in March 2019 at the age of 17.

The forward has played 129 times, scoring 35 goals for United, and attained his first England cap against Iceland in September 2020.
