Manchester's Christmas Markets have officially been cancelled

latest plans were for three single-row markets at Piccadilly Gardens, Deansgate and Cathedral Gardens, modelled on the regular Maker's Markets.

The markets, which would usually be kicking off in the coming weeks, attract tens of thousands of visitors to the city every year.This year's Christmas lights switch-on event, New Year's Eve fireworks and Bonfire Night celebrations have all also been called off.Councillor Pat Karney, Manchester's Christmas spokesperson, has said today that even the proposed smaller markets did not meet public health approval and that the council 'could never take any risks' with people's wellbeing.The city will still be lit up with Christmas lights and seasonal light installations, including the giant glowing Santa.
