Machete murder gang leader caged for brutal killing of dad dies behind bars

The 'leader' of an armed mob who murdered a dad in a brutal street attack has died in jail.Gary Martin, 44, died in HMP Addiewell on July 15 after being given a 20-year life sentence in 2018 for his part in the murder of Gary Clampett.

Clampett died from massive blood loss after being stabbed twice in the chest when he was set upon with knives, a machete, a sword, a chain, a hammer and a crowbar, at Fernie Place, Fraserburgh, on June 18, 2017.John Henderson, Thomas Martin, James Connor, and Dean Leech were also charged with the murder and sentenced to life imprisonment at the High Court in Glasgow.Joseph Martin was convicted of the reduced charge of culpable homicide, and another man, David Graham, walked free from court after the jury found the case against him not proven.Gary Martin is the second of the gang to die in prison, after James Connor's death at HMP Grampian in May, 2020.

The court heard in 2018 the gang went out looking for Clampett after an incident earlier that evening, which led to threats on Facebook and then the fatal encounter at around 4am.Clampett's murder was the latest incident in a long running feud between the Clampett and the Martin families.

The gang arrived on the street in a car and butchered the victim with an array of weapons.Clampett's blood was found on a top and trainer belonging to Joseph Martin and on a cap belonging to Thomas Martin.The court heard that John Henderson was the man who stabbed Clampett twice but the judge, Lord Beckett, said: “He could not have done this without the group overpowering Mr Clampett."Addressing Gary Martin, he added: “I consider you were the leader of this armed expedition by car.”In court Henderson admitted responsibility for Clampett's death and said it
