Joe & The Shitboys have accused The Great Escape of “ethnocentric bullying” after the festival dropped the Faroe Islands as its lead country partner over concerns over its whaling practices.The festival, held in Brighton and Hove each May, announced yesterday (September 24) that they would be withdrawing the Faroe Islands as their lead country partner – having only revealed the partnership earlier this month.It followed concerns over whaling in the Faroes – part of the Kingdom of Denmark – by local groups.The festival shared that, though it was dropping the partnership, they were “proud” to have worked with Faroese artists over the years, and would continue to collaborate with musicians from the territory. “We believe the contributions of Faroese artists should not be overshadowed by this matter, which bears no relation to their artistic work or their significant achievements,” they said in a statement shared to Instagram.Now, Faroe Island punk band Joe & The Shitboys have responded to the announcement, calling The Great Escape’s decision “ethnocentric ignorance”, “harmful” and “not inclusive in the slightest”.A post shared by The Great Escape Festival (@greatescapefest)Writing on Instagram today (September 25), frontman Fríði Djurhuus said: “After being reached out to by multiple anti-whaling activists, and the recent decision by The Great Escape to drop the Faroe Islands as their main partner due to our whaling practices, I, Joe, would like to publically state my position on whaling in the Faroe Islands, also known as “the grind.”“I am a Faroese vegan.

Brie Larson is set to appear on stage in Brighton and London next year, making her West End debut in Elektra.Oscar winner Larson will play the lead character in the revenge tragedy, which has been adapted by poet Anne Carson and directed by Daniel Fish (as per The Guardian).Larson, who won the Oscar for best actress for Room in 2016 and recently starred in the Apple TV+ series Lessons in Chemistry, said: “I couldn’t be more excited to perform in this Greek drama, or in better company collaborating with Daniel Fish and Anne Carson.“Storytelling has always been the way I organise life, feelings and experiences.”Speaking about the adaptation, Fish said that Carson’s translation, which was written in 1987 and published in 2001 “explodes the question” of “what is ancient and what is contemporary.” He said it presented a “thrilling challenge” for him as director.Elektra runs at the Theatre Royal in Brighton from January 13-18 before beginning an 11-week season at the Duke of York’s theatre in London on January 24.Tickets for the shows go on sale on October 2 here.A post shared by empire street (@estreetprods)Back in February, Larson refused to answer a question about the future of her involvement in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) as Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel.She first appeared in 2019’s Captain Marvel, before returning in Avengers: Endgame later in the same year. David Gilmour performed his first live gig in four years at an East Sussex pub’s open mic night yesterday (September 9) – check out footage below.The former Pink Floyd guitarist and singer performed alongside his daughter Romany Gilmour at The Neptune Live Music Bar in Hove, East Sussex.The musician’s last public gig was the 2020 tribute concert for Fleetwood Mac co-founder Peter Green at the London Palladium, according to concert archives.Gilmour posted to X last night that he “very much enjoyed crashing” his daughter’s gig at the pub “after finishing tour rehearsals”.In an accompanying video, Romany Gilmour can be heard asked her dad if he wants to “come and upstage me”, before they performed Pink Floyd’s 1975 track ‘Wish You Were Here’ together.Check out footage of the performance below.Very much enjoyed crashing @GilmourRomany’s gig at the Neptune in Hove this evening after finishing tour rehearsals… pic.twitter.com/9FxlX2YMIu— David Gilmour (@davidgilmour) September 9, 2024The Neptune Live Music Bar also posted to Instagram thanking Romany and David for an “electrifying evening”.In 2022, Gilmour put his Hove home up for sale, and as of that year reportedly spends most of his time living on a farm in Wisborough Green, near Horsham.The performance comes after Gilmour released his first album of new material in nine years last weekend, titled ‘Luck and Strange’.Romany Gilmour sings, plays the harp and appears on lead vocals on ‘Between Two Points’ and ‘Yes, I Have Ghosts’. His son Gabriel Gilmour also provide backing vocals.The LP was recorded over five months in Brighton and London.
