King Charles' 'only reason' he would abdicate as critics warn he's 'too old'

King Charles would only step down from the throne under one condition, says a royal expert, as he prepared celebrate his 75th birthday on Tuesday (November 14) at Clarence House.

His Majesty has faced calls to abdicate since he became King in September 2022 as he was the oldest person to become King at 73 after Queen Elizabeth II passed away at 96.

Some believe that he might hand over his duties to Prince William when he turns 75. Last year, Conor Friedersdorf wrote in The Atlantic: "A more consequential use of Charles's reign would be to rule briefly and abdicate at 75 the age when British judges are compelled to retire from the bench while touting the importance of passing the throne to Prince William in his son's prime rather than his dotage." Speaking to the Daily Star, royal expert Eric Schiffer said that those hoping for King Charles to step down will have a long wait. "King Charles, at 75, is as sharp and able as any global leader and brings an element of grace, wit and majesty consistent with his style that is light years away from being too old to reign," he shared. "There is no way the King would abdicate. The only way I could see the King abdicating is if he felt he was meaningfully unable to fulfil his official duties and obligations to the crown." If Charles lives as long as his mother did, he could be king for more than two decades. This means Prince William would be about 62 when he finally becomes king alongside wife Kate Middleton.

The King's birthday will be celebrated with a reception at Buckingham Palace for 400 nurses and midwives, as part of this year's NHS 75 celebrations, and he will be treated to a surprise birthday song by the NHS choir.
