Lily Gladstone, the breakout star of Martin Scorsese’s Western crime epic Killers of the Flower Moon, made history at the Golden Globes on Monday, becoming the ceremony’s first Indigenous nominee in the category of Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture.

The actress follows in the footsteps of Irene Bedard, who in 1994 became the first Native American woman to score a performer nom with her role in the TV movie Lakota Woman: Siege at Wounded Knee, a contender in the category of Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series, Anthology Series, or a Motion Picture Made for Television.

Killers scored a total of seven nominations this morning, including in the category of Best Motion Picture – Drama. Gladstone’s recognition is just the latest of many in a year that has also seen her garner much attention with the SXSW drama The Unknown Country, landing an Independent Spirit Award nomination, as well as a Gotham Award for Outstanding Lead Performance.

In Killers, which had her starring opposite Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro, the actress made a huge mark as Molly Kyle, a survivor of the “Reign of Terror” of the 1920s, which saw the furtive yet systematic murder of the Osage people following the discovery of oil on their Osage County land.
