ITV Benidorm's hot barman Mateo actor unrecognisable 17 years later after cheating death
ok.co.ukHe was the flirty barman in hit ITV sitcom Benidorm for 11 years from 2007 to 2018. But now actor Jake Canuso, who's 54, is unrecognisable from his time playing hottie Mateo Castellanos.
Jake starred alongside celebs including Crissy Rock – who's since opened up about her childhood abuse ordeal – as well as Johnny Vegas, Steve Pemberton and Sherrie Hewson, ending up as the show's longest-serving character and appearing in all 74 episodes.
Now he looks very different, with longer hair and stubble – and it also looks as though he's been hitting the gym. Back in 2004, Jake cheated death and miraculously survived the Indian Ocean tsunami on Boxing Day, while on holiday in Ko Phra Thong, Thailand.
He climbed a tree after seeing the first waves, and was trapped underwater after the tree snapped. He developed aquaphobia and was too scared to swimfor several years.
