Fred Sasakamoose was one of the first indigenous players in the NHL.Fred Sasakamoose was one of the first indigenous athletes to play in the NHL.

He laced up the skates for the Chicago Blackhawks during the 1953-1954 season, playing in a total of 11 games. Most of his career as a player in hockey was spent in the minor leagues.

Sasakamoose, a Cree, was an inspiration for indigenous hockey players in Canada, and he was known for the Fred Sasakamoose “Chief Thunderstick” national championship for young indigenous hockey players.
