A woman has told how she pulled out of buying her first house after spotting a 'costly' plant growing in the garden. Lois Connelly was hoping to purchase the Bristol property last autumn when she discovered the planted bamboo.
Home surveyors have recently been flagging the hardy plant as an issue - with it costing a hefty sum to remove it. This forces sellers to either take action to remove it or accept a discount on the price to reflect removal costs, the Mirror reports.Between June and December 2023, invasive plant specialist Environet saw a 55% annual increase in enquiries for bamboo removal relating to property transactions.
This shows that buyers are becoming more aware of the risks and insisting that problematic bamboo infestations are dealt with.NHS worker Lois luckily clocked the plant before she committed to the purchase.
She was in the process of buying a terraced house in Bristol in autumn 2023 when her Homebuyer Report raised the issue of bamboo and advised her to seek expert advice.Lois told WalesOnline: "It was my sister who spotted the bamboo initially when we viewed the property.
