Ex-serviceman says council doesn’t 'respect' veterans after Cambuslang War Memorial row

A Cambuslang ex-serviceman has claimed that South Lanarkshire Council doesn’t “respect” veterans after saying they undid local army cadets’ work at the Cambuslang War Memorial.However, the local authority says they were not approached about the work and assumed it was “vandalism”.Royal Navy veteran Stewart Walker spent 12 years serving his country and has since picked up the role of branch secretary treasure for the British Legion in Cambuslang.The Lanarkshire Live app is available to download now.

We removed the weeds in between the slabs, repainted the fence and cleaned the war memorial. The kids just wanted to show their respect to the people who gave the ultimate sacrifice for the upcoming Armed Forces Week.“The council has destroyed all of the work that the kids poured their heart and soul into by repainting it.“They obviously don’t respect veterans because all we were told was that the council doesn’t have the funds to repaint it.
