EastEnders heartbreak as youngster faces steroid addiction battle

EastEnders is set to tackle a heart-breaking storyline on the BBC soap as Denzel Danes becomes addicted to anabolic steroids.The character, played by Jaden Ladega, will develop a "new obsession" with the testosterone-producing drug in scenes airing in spring.The storyline will see Denzel struggle with his body image and as a result, become obsessed with exercise.

As he is introduced to steroids, the Walford resident will become hooked and attempt to hide his misuse from those close to him. "He continues to suffer in silence by imposing heavier restrictions on his diet and exercise regime," EastEnders revealed. "The storyline will follow the experience of Denzel, highlighting the influence that social media has on his perception of body image as well as the impact on his mental health and relationships as a result." The BBC soap is working with charity WithYou and experts with lived experiences to develop the storyline about steroid use and self-esteem issues.

Chris Clenshaw, the executive producer of EastEnders, said: "It was imperative for us to work alongside WithYou and individuals with lived experiences of steroid usage to accurately present and portray Denzel’s storyline. "Jaden’s [Ladega] performance has thoughtfully portrayed the isolating realities of a steroid dependency as we explore how social media has an impact on his perception of body image and the affects that anabolic steroid misuse are having on the youth of today." While a lead clinic pharmacist at WithYou said: "It is really important that this type of storyline highlights the character's journey and the risks they may face in a realistic way.
