The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has shared that on October 10, 2022, there are currently 90,738 Mandatory Reconsiderations of benefit decisions awaiting processing.

A Mandatory Reconsideration is a process which allows someone who disagrees with a decision about benefits, Tax Credits or child maintenance, to ask for the decision to be looked at again.

The figures for outstanding Mandatory Reconsiderations were shared by the Minister for Disabled People, Claire Coutinho MP, who explained that DWP are taking steps to help reduce the number of Mandatory Reconsiderations awaiting processing by improving its processes and correspondence to make it more efficient for claimants while ensuring effective decisions are being made.

In a response to Labour MP, Mohammad Yasin, Ms Coutinho also said that the DWP has increased its decision maker capacity by 470 full time equivalent staff over the last three months.
