New rules for Personal Independence Payments (PIP) will begin in August, the Department for Work and Pensions has confirmed.
Across the country more than three million people now claim the benefit, which is intended to support people with long-term ailments and disabilities access help with extra living and mobility costs.
However, the DWP says a new approach to part of the process will be adopted from next month. This relates to claimants with "high levels of functional impairment" and no likelihood of improvements to their condition, who get an ongoing awardof PIP that hasno end date.
These claimants undergo a minimal review after 10 years to check eligibility and payment levels. PIP began replacing Disability Living Allowance for those aged 16 to 64 in 2013.
