The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is sending out £25 payments to vulnerable people in areas experiencing particularly low temperatures this winter.

The Cold Weather Payment scheme aims to help those on a low income with their energy bills as the temperature drops. Between November 1 and March 31, people who are on certain means-tested benefits will be eligible for the payments.

Each time the temperature drops to zero or below for a consecutive period of seven days, a payment will be triggered. Local weather stations across the country are used to determine which postcode areas are eligible for the payments. In 11 postcode areas, the threshold has been reached twice - so eligible people there will be owed two payments worth £50 in total.
