Prison officers discovered drugs and mobile phones hidden in hair brushes, tennis balls and children’s chocolate treats. Inmates are using associates and family members to smuggle drugs and mobiles by lobbing them over the perimeter walls or fences.
In one four-month period there were 37 attempts to sneak banned items, which were foiled by prison officers. The contraband items have been discovered hidden in tennis balls, volleyballs, plastic Kinder eggs and even hair brushes.
There were 12 smuggling finds in September 2021, five in October, three in November, 11 in December and six in January this year.In some cases the smugglers have been spotted after the prison’s perimeter alarm system went off, on CCTV or during routine searches of the grounds.
Other attempts to get drugs and mobile phones through fences have been foiled by sniffer dogs. Prisoners caught with the contraband are reported to the police and face disciplinary action including a loss of privileges.
