A thug "smashed" a man's face, fracturing his cheekbone, after he bought him a drink.Steven Lowry, 38, was at a nightclub when he and his victim Daniel Fell bumped into each other in the bathrooms.

Lowry was aggravated, but the pair managed to talk it over and after the victim even bought him a drink which they drank at the bar, reports the Echo.On Friday, Liverpool Crown Court heard how things calmed down - however, later on as both men seemed to be leaving, "something was said" and CCTV showed Lowry approaching his victim.

Lowry, from Noctorum in Merseyside, raised his arm "at one stage," and then "without any warning whatsoever" he brought his elbow down on his victim and "smashed him in the face".Fell was left with a "number of injuries to his face." These included a fractured cheekbone which "he still suffers with to this day." The incident happened on Sunday, April 16, at the nightclub on Market Street in Birkenhead, Merseyside.The dad-of-three appeared for sentencing on Friday via videolink from HMP Altcourse after previously pleading guilty to wounding with intent to inflict grievous bodily harm.

Lowry has previous convictions for battering an ex-girlfriend.Defending, Mr Paul Wood, told the court the incident came against the background of a period of Lowry's life that showed "very positive" signs related to his behaviour and relationship with alcohol.He said: "It's been a wake up call seeing that footage [CCTV of the incident].
