Boy, 10, badly burnt in flat fire as man arrested on suspicion of arson

A 10-year-old boy was left badly burnt after a fire tore through his home in the middle of the night. The youngster remains in hospital following the blaze at Forth Close in Peterlee, Co Durham, last week.At around 1.15am on Thursday, December 14, a fire was allegedly started in a wheelie bin and spread to the upstairs flat.

A 21-year-old man, his 10-year-old brother, and two family dogs were inside at the time. The siblings, whose dad was out at work, were rescued by firefighters and taken to James Cook University Hospital, in Middlesbrough, for treatment, Chronicle Live reports.

One of the dogs tragically died in the blaze. The boy had been in a life-threatening condition due to the extensive burns he suffered, though he is no longer critical.

He has been transferred to Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary and is expected to need lengthy treatment.The 21-year-old suffered minor burns and the effects of smoke inhalation.Police launched a probe into the blaze and confirmed today that a man in his 20s had been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life.
