A 'black alert' has been issued to UK tourists in Lanzarote on one of the island's most popular beaches. The holiday hotspot has raised concerns for British visitors at Playa Blanca, a beloved spot on the Canary Island known for its stunning turquoise waters and golden sands.

However environmental group Ecologistas en Accion has handed Playa Blanca, near Papagayo, a black flag due to serious environmental issues.

The group's annual report, which has been calling out Spain's environmental mismanagement since 2005, includes Playa Blanca in its list of 48 beaches that have received the flag this year, citing 'sewage discharges' as the main cause for concern, reports the Mirror.
