Benjamin Mendy has been found not guilty of five rape charges, one count of attempted rape and a separate accusation of sexual assault.
However, Manchester City star faces a retrial in June after the jury failed to reach verdicts on two counts, one of rape and the other, attempted rape. After 14 days of consideration at Chester Crown Court, Judge Steven Everett dismissed a jury made up of seven men and four women, the Mirror reports.
They had initially been ordered to reach unanimous decisions on all 18 charges against Mendy, 28, and his co-accused Louis Saha Matturie, 41.During the 12th day of deliberations on Wednesday, Judge Everett announced he would accept a majority decision but the jury of 11 were still unable to reach a verdict, meaning the judge was forced to bring the ongoing trial from August to a close.
Addressing the jury, Judge Everett said: “It is not unusual that jurors don’t reach verdicts on some counts. You have to be true to your duty.”He excused them from any further jury duty for seven years.
