Fans of the much-loved radio presenter Steve Wright – who died suddenly last Monday – have vented their fury after the BBC’s Breakfast News programme discussed an upcoming tribute to the DJ – while mistakenly showing a photo of a completely different radio personality.

On the magazine news program Sunday morning, presenter Luxmy Gopal introduced a forthcoming tribute to Wright, who helmed a radio show for the BBC for four decades, but the screen flashed to a photo of equally familiar former BBC radio DJ Simon Bates.

Gopal told viewers: “Tributes continue to pour in from the world of radio for the legendary DJ Steve Wright. We will speak to his co-host Janey Lee Grace later on in the programme.” Her co-host Roger Johnson spotted the on-air error and quickly said: “That’s not Steve Wright by the way in case you were wondering, that’s Simon Bates.” Viewers were quick to take to social media to express their anger about the blooper, particularly as feelings are still running high that the BBC should never have removed Wright from his longrunning show on Radio 2, where he continued to broadcast to millions of listeners every afternoon – a chair he had inhabited for over three decades.

Much-loved DJ Wright was found dead at his flat on Monday morning. Authorities have cited his death as “unexpected but not suspicious.” Wright’s last broadcast to the nation aired a week ago with his Sunday Love Songs radio show.
