Asda offers staff paid day off to mark King Charles' Coronation - with a catch

Asda has announced a kind gesture to all its store staff members just ahead of the coronation of King Charles this May. The supermarket giant is offering all hourly paid staff members working on the Coronation bank holiday on Monday, May 8 the opportunity to request a paid day off.

The initiative is part of the Big Help Out campaign, a national day of volunteering to commemorate the coronation.Alternately, those who choose to remain at work during the coronation will receive double-time pay.

Any Asda staff member looking to take the time off to take part in the campaign will still be paid and their holiday entitlement will remain unaffected.The supermarket will further support the Big Help Out campaign by bringing together over 380 Asda community champions across the UK to make a difference in their local area by litter picking in parks, community centres, beaches and canals.Details of the Big Help Out event will be advertised on community boards in-store and Asda will also be surprising 10 Coronation-inspired community projects across the country with funding.Asda Chief People and Corporate Affairs Officer, Hayley Tatum, said:"We’re proud to mark the Coronation of King Charles III by supporting the ‘Big Help Out’ and enabling our colleagues to come together, celebrate and give back to their local communities"We understand that this is an incredibly important event for many of our colleagues, and they want to get involved, which is why we’re offering them the opportunity to take a day off to support their local area, without needing to use their holiday entitlement."We are also saying thank you to those colleagues who do choose to work on Monday 8th May by offering them a double time payment as a thank you for their
