The “virtual” APRA Music Awards is taking shape with the announcement of its host, an official streaming partner, and a new date.
The 2020 Awards were scheduled to take place May 26, but have been shifted to May 25 to pay respect to “Sorry Day,” a national day of reflection where all Australians can acknowledge and recognize the historical mistreatment of Aboriginal people, in particular the Stolen Generations.
It's “not an appropriate time for a celebration,” reads a statement from the award’s organizers. “We were moving so quickly to ensure our 2020 APRA Music Awards nominees could have an event to recognize their success over the past year, that we overlooked the very important fact that May 26 is ‘Sorry Day,’” the statement adds.
