Beasley, who was appointed to the state's Supreme Court in 2012 and concluded her tenure in December 2020 as chief justice, delivered the State of the North Carolina Judiciary address in July 2019 and touched on the subject, noting that "many judicial districts are evaluating their bail policies." "Counties big and small, urban and rural, are changing the way they handle criminal cases pre-trial, and they are beginning to see positive results," Beasley said.

A bloody night in Philadelphia left a 13-year-old boy dead after he was shot in the head and another man wounded after he was shot in the head while inside a car with a toddler, authorities said Monday night. The boy was identified on Tuesday as Jeremiah Wilcox, Philadelphia police said. Wilcox was shot in the head and face just before 7 p.m.

A Georgia pastor’s wife reportedly died one week after being struck in the head by a stray bullet.  Lashunda Heath-Ellison, wife of Temple of Faith Ministries Pastor Mac Ellison, was struck in the head while the couple was asleep around 12:30 a.m. last Wednesday at their DeKalb County home.  "Today October 10, 2022, My wife Lashunda Heath-Ellison gained her wings.

Baltimore prosecutors have dropped the charges against "Serial" podcast subject Adnan Syed, who had been convicted of killing a former girlfriend more than two decades ago, but saw his sentence vacated last month. Judge Melissa Phinn granted Balitmore State's Attorney Marilyn Mosby's request to vacate Syed's sentence on September 19 based on new evidence, the existence of other potential suspects, and gave prosecutors 30 days to decide whether to re-try Syed in the 1999 murder of Hae Min Lee. Mosby announced her decision in an afternoon news briefing.

Capitol Hill Police investigated a "suspicious substance" that may have arrived to the Capitol in a letter addressed to J6 Committee Chairman Benny Thompson, D-Miss. CHP officials reportedly called for those in the building nearby Thompson's office to shelter in place while the substance is investigated.The incident comes just one day before Thompson is scheduled to preside over the 10th January 6 Committee hearing. "USCP is investigating a suspicious substance or powder, potentially delivered in a letter," NBC News reporter Julie Tsirkin tweeted.

BreAnna Bell Mark Margolis and Mark O’Brien have been cast in Showtime’s “Your Honor” for Season 2 in recurring roles, Variety has learned exclusively. Margolis will play Carmine Conti, a much feared mobster who is the father of Gina Baxter (Hope Davis). After retiring to Italy, Carmine returns to bring order to the fractured Baxter family. O’Brien is set to portray Father Jay, the Baxter family’s priest whom they rely on for counsel.
