Whitby bakers step in on debate about how to eat local delicacy that exposes tourists

Yorkshire Coast town is that of a Botham's lemon bun, which has been the source of a frosty debate in the past as to how it should be eaten.

Locals have a particular way to go about the doughy delight that if not followed can show whether you're a local or not. If you've never tried a lemon bun from Botham's of Whitby then you are missing out.

The famous Whitby bakery has been making them for more than 100 years and the delicious treat has become a local delicacy, TeesideLive reports. Read more: The most stolen cars in North Yorkshire according to police The special recipe has been passed down through the generations from Elizabeth Botham down to her great and great-great-grandchildren that run the bakery today and still make the sweet and soft dough buns that are topped with a crown of white lemon icing.

To eat it, locals tear the bun in half, butter it and turn it inside out to make a kind of lemon bun sandwich. A lot of Whitby locals do the same but don't add extra butter. "The majority of the Botham family tear their lemon bun in half as you would cut a bun to make a sandwich then butter the bun, before turning the lemon icing inside to make a sandwich with the butter and icing inside the bun," said a Botham's spokesman.
