The "iconic" Forth Road Bridge is offering tours to its summit as part of a series of events celebrating its 60th anniversary this year.When it opened in 1964, the bridge was the longest suspension bridge outside the USA.
Anniversary celebrations are scheduled from Wednesday, September 4, to Saturday, September 7, coinciding with the bridge's opening to traffic on September 4, 1964.Members of the public can win places on sixty tours to the top of the towers, which stand at 156 metres above the high water level.
Local schoolchildren will participate in a ceremony on September 4 to honour the bridge's connection with the community.An exhibition detailing the crossing's history and future prospects, presented by industry experts, is set for the same day.
Additionally, on September 7, vintage and electric buses will provide trips across the bridge.Following the Queensferry Crossing's inauguration in August 2017, the Forth Road Bridge closed to general traffic but remains open for public transport, cyclists, and pedestrians.Transport Secretary Fiona Hyslop commented: "The Forth Road Bridge has long been part of the landscape along the River Forth and it is fitting that we mark its 60 years of service.
