Associated Press, Bennett's publicist, Sylvia Weirner, confirmed the news of his death. The legendary singer died in his hometown of New York on Friday, just two weeks shy of his birthday, she told the outlet.

While there was no specific cause of death named, Bennett had previously been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. In February 2021, Bennett's family revealed to fans that the legendary musician had been battling Alzheimer's disease and was first diagnosed in 2016.

According to the Mayo Clinic, Alzheimer's disease is defined as «a progressive neurologic disorder that causes the brain to shrink (atrophy) and brain cells to die, and is the most common cause of dementia — a continuous decline in thinking, behavioral and social skills that affects a person's ability to function independently.»The luminary performer rebooted his career in the '90s and beyond when he tapped into a whole new audience thanks in part to a long list of collaborations with the likes of Lady Gaga, Barbra Streisand, Elton John, Gloria Estefan, Billy Joel, John Legend, Elvis Costello, Tim McGraw, Celine Dion, Marc Anthony, and Bono, among others.

Bennett was a published author, a 19-time GRAMMY winner, a Kennedy Center Honors recipient, a philanthropist, and talented painter whose work has been featured in the Smithsonian and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
