The Mancunian Way: The darkest night

On Monday, photographer Sean Hansford and I spent the morning at Manchester Dogs’ Home in Harpurhey. We’re both dog-lovers, so on the face of it it wasn’t the hardest job we’d ever been given.

But in fact we were there to cover a story about the darkest night in the sanctuary’s 130-year history. On September 11, 2014, a devastating fire broke out at the dogs’ home.

Firefighters were on the scene in minutes and as passers-by and neighbours joined in the rescue effort some 150 dogs were pulled to safety.

But tragically another 60 weren’t so lucky. On Monday we met long-serving staff member Colin Ballance. He lives right next to the home, so when the fire broke out he was the first person on the scene.
