Two in five shoppers received a substitute product in their latest online supermarket order, a poll has found. Duck paste instead of duct tape, sausage rolls in place of toilet rolls, and Victorian sponge cake instead of scourers were among the stranger replacements.

Aldi - which has a click-and-collect shopping service - was narrowly the most likely of the nine online supermarkets to put substitutions in customer orders, according to the survey by consumer group Which?

Forty-nine per cent of its customers reported they had received a replacement item in their most recent shop. One Aldi customer reportedly said they received Ben and Jerry’s Phish Food ice cream instead of the breaded fish fillets they had ordered, while another received cooking oil instead of milk.

Meanwhile, half of customers who had ordered online at Sainsbury’s (48 per cent) received a substitution in their latest shop.
