The term first came about in the mid 2000s, coined by a psychologist who created a formula to try and sell holidays, which took into account factors like the month’s bad weather and the post-Christmas slump.
Ultimately it was a marketing ploy and it’s been dismissed as a myth by many. Yet you can’t deny January’s chilly weather can make you long for sunnier places and it's a month which sees a huge surge of demand when it comes to holiday bookings.
