For more than six minutes, Gavin Brown was pinned to the ground outside a pub in Stretford and held in a choke-hold. His life began to ebb away.

Aged 29 and a father-of-two , he died in hospital eight days later. That was in April 2019 and now, more than five years on, his family are struggling to come to terms with the fact that the chances that anyone will ever end up in a criminal court over his death have all but disappeared.

And - more than that - after their latest legal battle ended in defeat, they are facing a huge legal bill. A jury inquest concluded in 2021 he was unlawfully killed but the Crown Prosecution Service has repeatedly refused to bring criminal charges, arguing there wasn't a realistic prospect of a conviction.

Now, it can be reported that following his family's latest legal challenge, a High Court judge has ruled the CPS made a lawful and reasonable decision and dismissed calls for a full judicial review - a devastating blow for the Brown family.
