A rare 50p coin has sold for over 400 times its face value on eBay this week, with thousands more still in circulation.Known as the Kew Gardens 50p, the rare find was snapped up after one eager bidder offered an impressive £205 for the piece on Wednesday.
Just one day after this purchase, a second model of the coin was also bought for £165 in a separate sale after 27 other bidders fought to get their hands on the 50 pence piece.
Back in May, a third Kew Gardens coin sold for £150.On average this sells for £156 on eBay, according to Change Checker. But there have been some examples of it selling for as much as £250.
According to the Royal Mint, an estimated 210,000 coins were ever made, making it one of the rarest in circulation. Released in 2009, it commemorates the 250 year anniversary since the opening of Kew Gardens in 1759.The coin's face features the Royal Botanic Garden's famous Chinese Pagoda building, which served as a chamber for the park's founder Princess Augusta.
