‘Justified: City Primeval’s Raylan Givens Wins Last Showdown Before Retirement; Wait, Who Just Escaped From Prison?
SPOILER ALERTS ON JUSTIFIED: CITY PRIMEVAL FINALE: Timothy Olyphant’s return to the role of US Marshal Raylan Givens in Justified: City Primeval completed its seven-episode limited series run tonight on FX. Surviving the Oklahoma Wildman Clement Mansell (Boyd Holbrook), Givens seemed headed to a proper retirement, hanging up his badge and gun for a quiet life in Miami. Just when he was finally out — a pensioner content to refurbish a Florida shack and dote on the daughter he neglected for years — with the promise of a relationship with lawyer Carolyn (Aunjanue Ellis)…up pops Boyd Crowder, the charming silver-tongued psychopath played by Walton Goggins. Crowder, who vexed Raylan on and off throughout the original series creation from the Elmore Leonard novels, has escaped with the help of a girlfriend posing as a guard supposed to escort him to another prison that will help a physical malady. And just like that, Givens is faced with the prospect of returning once more before Crowder makes it across the border of Mexico with his accomplice. In the interview that follows this recap, Michael Dinner — who hatched the series revival with David Andron and directed three episodes including tonight’s finale — acknowledges there is every possibility that Givens could be back for one more showdown. The episode closes with Givens not answering the cell phone call to focus on his daughter. For the moment, anyway.

Bill Pohlad’s ‘Dreamin’ Wild’ Sells to Roadside Attractions, Plans Summer Release
Brent Lang Executive Editor Roadside Attractions has acquired North American rights to “Dreamin’ Wild,” a drama about the rediscovery of singer and songwriter Donnie Emerson after years spent in obscurity. The film, which was directed by Bill Pohlad, a filmmaker who unearthed gold from another music industry saga with his 2014 Brian Wilson film “Love & Mercy,” premiered at Venice. “Dreamin’ Wild,” a reference to an album that Donnie released with his brother Joe Emerson, will open nationwide only in theaters on August 4, 2023. Roadside previously released “Love & Mercy,” making this a reunion for the filmmaker and distributor. The film centers on the critical reevaluation of “Dreamin’ Wild,” and the impact that second chance has on Donnie, his wife Nancy, brother Joe, and father Don Sr. as they must come to terms their new fame. Pohlad uses two different actors to explore the real-life characters in different time periods, just as he did in “Love & Mercy” with Paul Dano and John Cusack sharing the role of The Beach Boys founder Brian Wilson. This time, Oscar-winner Casey Affleck (“Manchester by the Sea”) plays the older Donnie Emerson and Noah Jupe, who appeared in “Honey Boy,” plays the younger. Walton Goggins (“Justified”) and Jack Dylan Grazer (“It”) take on Donnie’s brother Joe, while Beau Bridges plays the family patriarch. Zooey Deschanel plays Donnie’s wife Nancy.
