Last week, Ofgem, was forced to hike the energy price cap up by 54 per cent to a record £1,971 for a typical household as wholesale gas prices soared to unprecedented highs with the decision expected to impact 22 million households across the UK which are on their energy supplier's default tariff.
The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is reminding all energy customers that if they are receiving certain benefits they may be eligible for extra money - either directly or to their supplier - to help keep their homes warm during the last months of winter.
You may be eligible for a Cold Weather Payment, Warm Home Discount or a Winter Fuel Payment and so far some 13,000 Cold Weather Payments have been triggered since November in 25 postcode areas across Scotland due to freezing temperatures.
These are an automatic top-up of £25 triggered to eligible households when the average temperature has been recorded as, or is forecast to be, zero degrees Celsius or below over seven consecutive days at any of the 27 weather stations across Scotland.
