As the world marks the first anniversary of TV legend Paul O’Grady, his husband Andre Portasio has shared an intimate insight into his husband’s life and legacy, including why he would never allow BBC News on their telly. The surprising admission came during Andre’s poignant interview with The Mirror, in which he recounted his husband’s final moments, which came at the end of an ordinary, but wonderfully relaxed day.

While recounting the lead up to the fateful moment in which Paul passed away, Andre revealed that Paul had attended a meeting about his radio show, before heading home to enjoy a long walk with his husband and five dogs. The pair then settled down for the night to watch one of Paul’s favourite shows, the Kent local news on ITV. “He was on wonderful form and then we settled down in the living room and switched on the telly to catch up on Kent ITV News,” explained Andre. “He always insisted on watching the presenter Sangeeta [Bhabra] – he loved her and would never allow me to put the BBC on.

It was all about ITV. He left to get some tea, and I heard this loud bang. But because the house is big and old, I didn’t think of anything at first.” Instead, Andre continued to watch the show until he noticed two of the family dogs coming in and out of the kitchen, something he initially believed meant Paul must have gone to the cottage in the grounds of the house which they were renovating.

Sadly, it was only when he got up to make some dinner that he found Paul lying unconscious on the floor, a moment he revealed, left him frozen in shock. “I just didn’t know what to think at first,” he recalled.
