Olympics star dies after being 'set on fire by ex-boyfriend'

A marathon runner who competed in the Paris Olympics this summer has died after allegedly being set on fire by an ex-boyfriend.

Running star Rebecca Cheptegei, 33, died in hospital days after the attack.The long distance runner, who came 44th in the women’s marathon at the Paris Olympics had been in critical condition since Sunday, after suffering severe burns to over 80% of her body.

Just weeks after competing at the Olympics, the athlete was reportedly assaulted at their home in Endebess, Kenya. According to police reports, the incident occurred during a domestic dispute, where the boyfriend horrifically poured petrol over Cheptegei before setting her alight.

Rebecca had returned home from church with her children when she was attacked by her partner. It’s claimed that the couple had argued about the land their home was built on.
