North Lanarkshire shopkeepers warned over underage sales by Trading Standards

Shopkeepers in North Lanarkshire are being warned they face prosecution if they sell tobacco or nicotine vaping products to underage customers.This follows a recent test purchase exercise in 20 local shops where underage customers were able to buy cigarettes or vaping products on three occasions without being asked for proof of age.The council did not name or provide details of the stores which made the underage sales.The Lanarkshire Live app is available to download now.

Paul Bannister, from trading standards, told us : “Simply asking a customer how old they are is not enough. “Sellers must ask for, and be shown, valid and recognised photo ID, such as a passport, a photographic driving licence or a proof of age scheme approved card, to prevent illegal sales of age restricted products.“We recommend this is asked for whenever a customer looks under 25.“We are determined to crack down on businesses flouting the law and we will continue to carry out checks and test purchases to identify shops who are not
