Monkeypox has been spreading through the UK with Scotland's latest figures showing 46 laboratory-confirmed cases. In an attempt to slow the spread of Monkeypox, those who are at an increased risk for the condition will be offered an Imvanex vaccine.
According to Public Health Scotland, at-risk groups includes some gay and bisexual men as well as a small number of healthcare workers.Monkeypox is not a sexually transmitted infection, though it can be passed on by direct contact during sex.
Monkeypox can cause flu-like symptoms and rashes with small spots which blister before scabbing over. However, some new symptoms have also been discovered, Wales Online reports. “These symptoms include single genital lesions and sores on the mouth or anus,” a paper in The New England Journal of Medicine said.
One in ten people had a single skin lesion in the genital area and 15% had anal or rectal pain said Dr John Thornhill, a sexual health consultant and lecturer at Queen Mary University of London.
