With freezing conditions expected to continue, we may face challenges with our cars, from slippery commutes to engine issues.

It's important to stay proactive to ensure a safer and smoother drive during the winter period.Unlike many common warning lights, the glow plug light symbol is specific to diesel cars and isn't widely known.

This can be confusing, especially for new drivers or those switching from petrol cars, as it differs from the familiar instant ignition experience that most drivers are used to.Car expert, Callum Butler from GAP insurance provider, ALA Insurance, comments: “When temperatures are below freezing, glow plugs play a crucial role in diesel engines by aiding the ignition process and preheating the combustion chambers."He adds: “Neglecting its importance may lead to difficulty starting the engine and in the worst-case scenario, can result in incomplete combustion which may cause engine misfires, increased wear, or even long-term damage to vital components.”Callum expresses: “In freezing temperature, turn the key to activate the electronics.

If the glow plug light warning appears, wait until it goes off before starting the engine to ensure the glow plugs preheat the combustion chambers and allow for the optimal ignition temperature.”Although he emphasises the potential risks associated with leaving a car unattended while running in extremely cold weather.
