There are fears a redeveloped student block will mean Muslim neighbours ‘might have to wear their hijabs in their kitchens’.
New plans have been drawn up to regenerate the Victoria Point student complex, on Hathersage Road in Ardwick. Blocks within the complex were going to be either refurbished or rebuilt in the ‘£100 million’ project which would increase the number of students by 310.
But those plans hit the buffers on Thursday (October 24) because of fears on how the new student housing would affect its neighbours. Some Muslim women wear headscarves, including hijabs, in order to be modest for religious reasons. Planners countered by saying the tallest blocks will be roughly 40 metres away from the back gardens of Upper West Grove, the nearest terraced homes to the block.
