A missing motorist was found dead in a field after her body had been mauled by wildlife. The 55-year-old, who has not been identified, wandered away from her car when it broke down just before Christmas.
Officers who discovered her body said it had been partially eaten by wildlife.It’s believed she began walking through fields near Monkton, Ayrshire, after phoning the AA.A missing persons inquiry was launched after the woman’s car was found on a country road.Officers tried to trace the woman, who is from the Airdrie area, on December 18 but were unable to locate her.The following day her body was found with the help of a sniffer dog, close to where her car had been abandoned.Police believe a fox or badger may be responsible for the mauling.The death is not being treated as suspicious.A source said: “She had phoned the AA to try to get them to come and help.“But rather than waiting with the vehicle, she got out and walked away, cutting through the fields.“She’s then died while she’s been going through the fields.” Don't miss the latest news from around Scotland and beyond - Sign up to our daily newsletter here .
