Matty Healy is taking a stand. On Friday (July 21), the 34-year-old performer allegedly got his band, The 1975, kicked out of a festival after sharing his thoughts on the Malaysian government mid-show. “Alright, we got to go, we just got banned from Kuala Lumpur,” he told concertgoers, per a video taken by a fan at the show. “See ya later.” The band then grabbed their instruments and left the stage. Keep reading to find out why… The end of their set came after Matty gave an impassioned speech on the Malaysian government’s treatment of LGBTQ+ people. “I’m f—king furious,” Matty said, per Far Out magazine. “That’s not fair on you because you aren’t representative of your government.

It’s f—king ridiculous to tell people what they can do.” He went on to say that the band had almost backed out of the show over the country’s politics. “I pulled the show yesterday, and we had a conversation, and we said, ‘We can’t let the kids down because they’re not the government,’” he revealed. Matty continued, “If you wanna bring me here, then f—k off.

I’ll take your money, you can ban me, but I’ve done this before, and it doesn’t feel good.” He finished his speech by sharing a kiss with his bandmate Ross MacDonald, which earned loud cheers from the crowd.

The group played their track “I Couldn’t Be More in Love,” before exiting the stage. Earlier this month, Matty looked back at some of the more controversial moments in his career and said he’d like to “take back” some things.
