More than 450,000 people would see their council tax bills soar in Greater Manchester if Labour scraps the single person's discount, figures show.

Angela Rayner said that Labour has no plans to scrap the 25% council tax discount for single people, but refused to rule it out, sparking fears that millions could see their bills skyrocket.

The Deputy Prime Minister, who is also the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government as well as Ashton-under-Lyne MP, told the Commons her Government 'is about making sure that working people are better off'.

But when asked about the single person discount, which reduces council tax bills by 25% for taxpayers who live alone, Ms Rayner did not commit to keeping it in place.
