A knifeman who stabbed a young father to death in front of his partner and neighbours was jailed for life today. Mark Allison fled the scene and tried to hide the murder weapon while the witnesses battled in vain to save Gary Handling's life.

The 25-year-old, who was at large on licence at the time of the killing following his release from a sentence for previous violence, was slammed by a judge for having shown "no remorse".

He was ordered to serve a minimum of 21 years in prison - the so called "punishment part" of his life sentence - before being eligible for parole.Allison, from Stranraer, appeared for sentence at the High Court in Stirling, having been convicted in January by a jury at the High Court in Glasgow who watched CCTV footage showing the murder, and rejected Allison's claim that he had acted in self-defence.Judge Lord Young said Allison, then 23, had confronted his victim, Gary Handling, 33, who had a young son, on two previous occasions. He then returned to confront him, outside his house in John Simpson Drive, Stranraer, shortly before midnight on June 6th 2022.

CCTV footage showed Allison's girlfriend trying to guide him away from trouble, but he resisted her efforts.Get the latest news sent straight to your messages by joining our WhatsApp community today. You'll receive daily updates on breaking news as well as the top headlines across Scotland. No one will be able to see who is signed up and no one can send messages except the Daily Record team. All you have to do is click here if you're on mobile, select 'Join Community' and you're in!If you're on a desktop, simply scan the QR code above with your phone and click 'Join Community'.We also treat our community members to special offers, promotions, and
