Broadcaster Kaye Adams has revealed the toll on her mental health caused by a nine-year £124,000 legal dispute with the taxman.

The Loose Women host and Radio Scotland presenter said she has been in financial limbo for almost a decade and the stress of the case had been “almost unbearable”.

In a judgment issued this week, Adams, 60, won a battle with HMRC to prove she is a freelance worker con-tracted via her firm Atholl House Productions Limited.HMRC said that she was an employee and should pay £124,000 in tax and national insurance for presenting her show on Radio Scotland between 2013 and 2017.Adams appealed to the First Tier Tax Tribunal, and first won her case in April 2019.

However HMRC refused to accept it, leading to more hearings.HMRC had tried to use off-payroll working rules – the IR35 directive – which aims to clamp down on “disguised” employment.Adams’ self-employment status was confirmed by tribunal judge Tony Beare.Get the latest news sent straight to your messages by joining our WhatsApp community today. You'll receive daily updates on breaking news as well as the top headlines across Scotland. No one will be able to see who is signed up and no one can send messages except the Daily Record team. All you have to do is click here if you're on mobile, select 'Join Community' and you're in!If you're on a desktop, simply scan the QR code above with your phone and click 'Join Community'.We also treat our community members to special offers, promotions, and adverts from us and our partners.
