How Eggheads star Dave 'Tremendous Knowledge' Rainford got his nickname

Eggheads star Dave Rainford, who was described as 'one of the all-time great quizzers' following his death aged 51 earlier this month, got his big break in an unlikely setting.

In the late 80s the former Manchester Grammar School pupil had skipped university after realising his vast store of general knowledge meant he could earn good money by playing the newly popular quiz machines.

Dave, who was raised by his Jamaican grandmother in Chorlton, soon began travelling round the pubs and clubs of Greater Manchester and the North West draining the machines of their top prizes.

It was reported in the national press that he got so good at it a number of landlords barred him from their premises. In fact the story was slightly exaggerated.
