HMRC issues warning as it dispels Income Tax myth for online sellers

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has issued a warning to those with misguided views on selling things online. The government department highlighted that there is a wide misconception that individual sellers will be taxed on any item that they sell.

However, it noted that people who sell on digital platforms such as Etsy or eBay may have their details collected and sent to HMRC by the digital platform.

This is because the UK is part of the Organisation for Economic Development (OECD) Model Reporting Rules for Digital Platforms.

It highlights that a seller is anyone registered on a digital platform in order to sell goods or services, even if they're not directly offering the goods or services themselves.
