An 81-year-old man with coronavirus was told by doctors that 'he would not make it through the night' - but he was determined to fight the virus to make it back home for his wife, suffering terminal cancer.

Doctors believed that the great-granddad to 21 youngsters, William Kaye, would not survive when he was admitted to the Royal Bolton Hospital in the early hours of April 3.

His family even began making funeral arrangements as they waited for doctors to call them with the news that he had died. But, to the amazement of both his family and hospital staff, the Radcliffe pensioner fought his way back from the brink, making a 'miraculous recovery'.
